A 30 Year Old Speyside with a Sense of Mischief

Released by The Whisky Exchange for April Fool’s Day 2021, this unusually presented 30 year old single malt comes from an undisclosed Speyside distillery. Despite the deliberately playful “Extremely Young I Wish I Were Older” label, the whisky inside carries a genuine three-decade age statement and was matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks.

Bottled at 51.7% ABV and limited to 869 bottles, the release combines serious mature Speyside whisky with the irreverent character of The Whisky Exchange’s April Fool bottlings. The distillery remains intentionally unnamed, leaving the whisky’s age, provenance and distinctive presentation to form the heart of its collector appeal.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Lemon cake and sweet sponge layered with pineapple, pear and mint, developing into butterscotch, orange and warming spice.
  • Palate: Candied lemon and citrus lead into creamy vanilla, white chocolate and sweet confectionery, with herbal mint and gentle spice adding complexity.
  • Finish: Sweet and buttery with vanilla biscuit, nutmeg, aniseed and a lingering touch of cool mint.

About the Bottling

The April Fool series plays with the conventions of whisky presentation, and this 2021 First Release is particularly memorable for the contrast between its tongue-in-cheek identity and the maturity of the whisky itself. Behind the joke is a 30 year old Speyside single malt from an undisclosed distillery, matured in first-fill ex-bourbon casks and released in a run of only 869 bottles.

Its combination of substantial age, anonymous distillery provenance and intentionally unconventional presentation gives the bottle a different kind of collectability from traditional prestige releases. It is both a mature Speyside whisky and a snapshot of The Whisky Exchange’s more playful approach to limited-edition bottling.
