A Natural Cask Strength Highland Release

Distilled at Balmenach on 2nd October 2002 and bottled by Thompson Bros after more than 15 years in a single refill barrel, this Highland single malt was removed from cask in 2017 before eventual release as part of the independent bottler’s naturally presented range. Limited to only 155 bottles and bottled at a robust 57.5% ABV, it captures a spirit-driven profile of orchard fruit, cereal richness, waxy texture, and restrained oak influence with the natural intensity and texture for which Thompson Bros releases have become increasingly respected among enthusiasts.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Green orchard fruits, malted barley, beeswax, lemon peel, vanilla cream, and gentle oak spice.
  • Palate: Oily and concentrated with pear drops, cereal sweetness, citrus oils, white pepper, honey, and soft oak.
  • Finish: Long and spirit-driven with lingering malt richness, waxy texture, subtle spice, and drying oak.

About the Distillery

Balmenach has long remained a relatively understated Highland distillery, with much of its production traditionally directed toward blends. Independent bottlings have increasingly highlighted the distillery’s muscular spirit character, often showing oily texture, cereal richness, orchard fruit, and a robust structure well-suited to long maturation and minimal intervention bottling styles.

About the Bottling

Thompson Bros. has developed a strong reputation among enthusiasts for releasing whiskies with minimal intervention, focusing on transparency, natural presentation, and preserving as much of the spirit’s original character as possible. With maturation, bottling, dilution, and filtration handled in-house, their releases emphasise texture, individuality, and spirit-driven complexity over excessive cask influence. This refill barrel matured Balmenach reflects that philosophy closely, allowing the distillery’s naturally waxy and cereal-forward profile to remain central while delivering the concentration and texture expected from a high-strength single cask release. Limited to only 155 bottles, it represents a small-scale independent bottling aimed squarely at traditional whisky enthusiasts.

Please review all product images carefully. Minor cosmetic wear to labels, capsules, cartons, or presentation cases may be present due to age, long-term storage, or secondary-market sourcing.

Natural variation in fill level, packaging condition, and label ageing can occur in older releases and forms part of the character of mature collectible whisky.
