A 43 Year Old Single Grain from Lost Carsebridge

Distilled at Carsebridge in October 1976 and bottled by Douglas Laing in November 2019, this exceptional single grain Scotch whisky spent 43 years maturing in a single refill hogshead. Drawn from Cask DL13717, the release yielded only 210 individually numbered bottles.

Selected for Douglas Laing’s prestigious XOP – Xtra Old Particular – range, the whisky was bottled at natural cask strength of 50.7% ABV, without colouring or chill filtration. Its combination of remarkable age, single-cask provenance and spirit from a distillery that disappeared from Scotland’s whisky landscape decades ago gives this release particular archival significance.

Tasting Notes

Nose: Sweet wax and cedar wood with fragrant rose water and touches of hard candy.

Palate: Ginger biscuit and burnt orange develop into rich treacle toffee and softly toasted marshmallow.

Finish: Rich and lingering, carrying the sweeter baked and toasted notes of the palate through the finish.

About the Distillery

Carsebridge was a Lowland grain distillery established in the 18th century at Alloa. Originally producing malt whisky, it was converted to grain production during the 19th century and became an important source of whisky for blending. The distillery closed in 1983 and was subsequently dismantled, leaving surviving mature stocks as the remaining connection to a lost chapter of Scottish grain whisky production.

Douglas Laing reserves its XOP – Xtra Old Particular – designation for exceptionally mature single-cask whiskies. This 1976 Carsebridge was drawn from one refill hogshead after 43 years of maturation and produced only 210 bottles. Presented in the series’ substantial wooden case and bottled at natural cask strength, it combines the provenance of a closed distillery with the individuality of a single-cask release.
