Ledaig 1995 29 Year Old Westie Sponge Edition No.4 | Decadent Drinks
Archive Details
A Rare Mature Island Release
Distilled at Tobermory Distillery on the Isle of Mull in 1995 and bottled in 2024 as Westie Sponge No.4 by Decadent Drinks, this 29 year old Ledaig matured in a refill sherry butt before bottling at natural cask strength. Drawn from an era when the distinction between Tobermory and Ledaig profiles was often less defined, this release presents a beautifully mature style balancing restrained peat smoke, coastal minerality, old-style Highland character, and deeply integrated sherry influence.
Tasting Notes
- Nose: Coastal smoke, old leather, dried orange peel, polished oak, pipe tobacco, sea salt, and dark fruit richness.
- Palate: Mature and layered, revealing soft peat embers, sherried malt, dark chocolate, oily citrus, salted caramel, and subtle medicinal notes.
- Finish: Long, coastal, and drying, with lingering smoke, warming spice, old oak, and maritime salinity.

About the Distillery
Tobermory Distillery, located on the Isle of Mull, produces both unpeated Tobermory and peated Ledaig spirit. Older Ledaig releases from the 1990s have developed a particularly strong following among enthusiasts for their combination of coastal peat, oily texture, and slightly untamed character that differs markedly from modern heavily peated styles.
Mature examples from this era, especially those with long refill sherry maturation, are increasingly sought after for their ability to balance maritime smoke with layered fruit, waxy complexity, and old-school Highland depth.
About the Bottling
The Westie Sponge series was created by Decadent Drinks to celebrate the distinct whisky styles of Scotland’s western Highlands and Islands. Rather than pursuing heavily modernised peat profiles, the series focuses on characterful and expressive malts that reflect regional identity, texture, and maturity.
This release captures a style of older Ledaig that has become increasingly difficult to source: lightly peated yet richly sherried, coastal yet elegant, and unmistakably old-school in profile. Matured for nearly three decades, it represents a highly individual independent bottling from one of Scotland’s most distinctive island distilleries.
