A Rare Heavily Peated Highland Single Cask

Distilled in March 2007 at Loch Lomond Distillery and bottled in May 2024 by independent bottler The Whisky Jury, this 17 year old Croftengea is an exceptionally distinctive Highland single malt. Matured in a single refill bourbon hogshead and bottled at a powerful 59.2% cask strength, this release yielded just 247 individually numbered bottles. Representing Loch Lomond's heavily peated Croftengea spirit style, it offers a compelling combination of limited availability, unconventional distillation character, and independent bottling pedigree.

Tasting Notes

  • Nose: Assertive earthy peat smoke, coastal minerals, fresh citrus peel, vanilla, and toasted barley, with hints of damp wood and herbal complexity.
  • Palate: Powerful and oily, bringing together intense peat smoke, malt sweetness, lemon zest, cracked pepper, and warming oak spice. The refill hogshead allows the underlying distillate to remain prominent.
  • Finish: Long, smoky, and warming, with lingering mineral notes, dry oak, peppery spice, and a persistent earthy peat character.

About the Bottling

This release marks The Whisky Jury's first selection from Loch Lomond, showcasing Croftengea, one of the distillery's most intensely peated spirit styles. Selected from a single refill hogshead, the whisky spent 17 years developing while retaining the robust character of its original distillate. The relatively restrained influence of refill oak provides an opportunity to appreciate the distinctive weight, texture, and smoky personality associated with Croftengea.

As the bottler's 92nd release, with only 247 bottles produced, this expression offers collectors an individually numbered example of a relatively uncommon Highland malt identity. Its combination of substantial age, high natural strength, and limited single-cask provenance makes it particularly appealing to enthusiasts of characterful independent Scotch whisky.

About the Distillery

Situated near the southern shores of Loch Lomond, the distillery is renowned for its unusually versatile production methods, employing different still configurations to create a diverse range of malt whisky styles. Croftengea occupies the heavily peated end of this spectrum, distinguished by its robust, oily spirit character. Unlike the more familiar expressions associated with Loch Lomond, independently bottled Croftengea provides collectors with a distinctive perspective on the distillery's remarkable range of production styles.
