About Glenfoyle

The Glenfoyle name originates from a 19th-century distillery near Gargunnock in Stirlingshire. Once owned by Victorian entrepreneur James Calder, the original Glenfoyle Distillery ceased production in 1923. Although the distillery itself disappeared from Scotch whisky production, its name survived and was later revived in several different forms.

Invergordon Distillers acquired the former Glenfoyle distillery buildings in 1971 and subsequently introduced Glenfoyle Reserve, a 12 year old blended Scotch aimed at export markets. By the late 1980s the Glenfoyle name was also being used for an 8 year old blended malt, before eventually appearing as a single malt during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Longman Distillers, an Invergordon subsidiary associated with the group's export business, formed part of this later chapter in the Glenfoyle story.

About the Bottling

This 17 year old expression was released in 2002 from spirit distilled in 1985. As the original Glenfoyle Distillery had been closed for more than six decades by the time this whisky was distilled, the Glenfoyle name on the bottle represents the historic brand rather than the source distillery. The actual Highland distillery responsible for the malt was not disclosed. Its 1985 vintage, mature age statement, unusual provenance and surviving original presentation make it a fascinating example of how historic Scotch whisky names sometimes continued long after their original distilleries disappeared.
